Tavistock AFC 3rds 0 – 8 Mainstone SSC
On 22.10.11 Tavistock AFC 3rds faced a tough assignment against league leader’s Mainstone, and, due to injuries and other commitments, did so with a very depleted squad.
From the start the Lambs, having set themselves up to defend in depth and look to catch Mainstone on the break, were put under pressure, but they kept their shape and can take credit for a great team effort which, for the first 40 minutes, frustrated Mainstone, blunting their attack and forcing them into desperate shots from distance. Unfortunately, just before the interval, Tavistock conceded twice to close range efforts that the Lambs’ defence would have been disappointed not to clear.
Buoyed by their late success in the first half, Mainstone surged forward from the whistle, and the Lambs were unable to maintain the same level of discipline and the sheer physical effort to stop a rampant Mainstone attack, that eventually ran out comfortable winners.
16 year old Tyler Borthwick, playing out of position at left back, and Ed Argles, at right back, both had impressive games putting in several good challenges and never giving up; Tyler especially providing one of the main attacking outlets as well as doing his defensive work with great determination. The Gibbings brothers, Dave and Mark, did well in protecting the back four, especially in the first half; with another 16yr old James Young having a good game on the left of midfield.
This very young Lambs team have a lot to learn but are acquitting themselves very well against the much stronger, physical and more experienced players they have been facing but, having played most of the strongest teams in the league, it is hoped that the squad will push on and results will start to improve.
